money gift

Last week I sent you the new relationship with money-as-John Travolta story. (Read “John Travolta Loves You” on my blog.) The very next day a new one came in.

This is why I love my job. I want you to read beyond the dollar amounts and listen for the happiness and optimism and new relationship to life. THAT’S what this is really about:

“Dear Morgana,

I just have to tell you this. I listened to the teleclass you did last night — found out about it an hour before it was scheduled, felt moved to attend.

Wow. Wow wow wow wow. I haven’t even done the Money Monster exercise yet, but for some reason I totally connected with the idea of the Money Honey and got mine right away, plus an action to take.

I took that action last night (set some financial boundaries with my adult children) and this morning two things happened.

Why Money Messes With Your Mind

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

Hey Alchemists–

I came across a fantastic article on the psychology of money. Our brains are WIRED to respond to money in a very specific way. It’s as if the moment the idea of money arises, our warm and fuzzy love feelings switch off, and we go into competition and self-sufficiency mode. Money makes us IRRATIONAL.

This has everything to do with the “Money vs. Love” problem I talk about with Financial Alchemy, and why the old affirmations and law of attraction tricks don’t go far enough. We have to literally re-wire your response–get you thinking about money from a different part of your brain!

In the meanwhile, this is fascinating:

Dough, wonga, greenbacks, cash. Just words, you might say, but they carry an eerie psychological force. Chew them over for a few moments, and you will become a different person. Simply thinking about words associated with money seems to makes us more self-reliant and less inclined to help others. And it gets weirder: just handling cash can take the sting out of social rejection and even diminish physical pain.

This is all the stranger when you consider what money is supposed to be. For economists, it is nothing more than a tool of exchange that makes economic life more efficient. Just as an axe allows us to chop down trees, money allows us to have markets that, traditional economists tell us, dispassionately set the price of anything from a loaf of bread to a painting by Picasso. Yet money stirs up more passion, stress and envy than any axe or hammer ever could. We just can’t seem to deal with it rationally… but why?

When clients can’t afford you

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

chart

What does it mean when clients “can’t afford” you? This is such a powerful learning, when you finally get it…

“Can’t afford” to hire you means they don’t want you enough. That’s all. The bottom line is if someone doesn’t hire you, they don’t see the value you give as worthy of the sacrifice. That doesn’t mean you don’t provide great value. That doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to be well paid. They just don’t see an urgent connection between what they need and what you offer. Either you aren’t giving them what they perceive they need, it’s not important enough to them, or you are offering what they need but you’ve dropped the ball in communication.

When someone tells me she “can’t afford” me, I always take the opportunity to point out that it’s more powerful–and honest–for them to say, “It’s not an economic priority for me at this time” instead of “I can’t afford” it. I’m totally cool with not being an economic priority! Nothing wrong with that!

As a coach, I feel it’s unethical to allow (even prospective) clients to relieve themselves of responsibility for their choices. I will not collude with their disempowerment. It is PROFOUNDLY disempowering to make money or time a scapegoat, an excuse for not doing something. This doesn’t serve them. And it can be quite LIBERATING to be given total permission to say “No. Other things are a higher priority.”

At the same time it takes enormous self-management to hear someone talk about having trouble coming up with money for food or rent. Everything in me wants to say, “Don’t hire me! You can’t afford it!” (And I’ve done that, much to my regret.)

It is ALWAYS their call to make. To give a discount, to give it away for free, or tell someone they can’t afford me is, essentially, saying “You don’t have what it takes.” Ewwww.

The people I take on as clients want me so badly that they’ll do whatever it takes to hire me, and they thank me. The moment I find myself trying to convince someone to hire me, I need to pause and acknowledge we probably aren’t a good match, and say so.

Ironically, this hands off approach (trying to “overcome objections” tends to bite me in the a**) is often enough to motivate people to come back and hire me. And if it doesn’t, we weren’t a good match.

I’ll add one last word: I find it helps to be CRYSTAL CLEAR about what results a client will get, how they’ll know, and when. I never promise “you will make money,” but I can tell them precisely what I can guarantee. And I stay absolutely in integrity about what I can promise and what I can’t.

What is Financial Alchemy?

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

What is Financial Alchemy? Here’s what I shared in an interview Steven McCrory did with me for Magical Blend Magazine a while back:

Morgana: what is Financial Alchemy?
Financial Alchemy is the transformation of your relationship with money, and when your inner relationship with money changes, you see the outward results in your life.

What do you mean by relationship with money?
Your relationship with money is as real and dynamic as your relationship with another human being. If you were to say to your wife, “I don’t trust you. You’re going to leave me. You’re the reason I can’t do what I want with my life. You are responsible for war and suffering. You are the root of all evil,” how would that impact your relationship?

Not well.

What if she said those things about you?

I’d feel terrible.
Would you want to stick around someone who said those things?

Probably not.
Exactly. And those are things we say to money all the time. Why would money want to stick around? We push it away with beliefs we may not even know we have. If something is evil and keeps you from happiness, of course you’re going to protect yourself and push it away.

I understand the pushing it away part. Could you explain what you mean about money wanting to stick around?
This is the Alchemy part, the change in the relationship. I make money a person. Making money into a person you want to have a relationship—as opposed to this villain you have to have in your life—creates an emotional resonance instead of an intellectual exercise. And money can speak to you, tell you what you need to do to create a better relationship. It’s magical.

How did you come up with Financial Alchemy?
My own experience. Where else do things come from? For the longest time I struggled with money. As a coach I was helping people sell films and book television series and realize their dreams. But I was uncomfortable talking about my fees and asking to be paid. Can you imagine? Actually I find this dynamic is very common among caring, spiritual, service oriented people. Especially women. Before anything could change, I had to look at my internal relationship with money. I took a look at negative beliefs and experiences I hadn’t thought about in many years. Family members stopped talking to each other for decades because of money. I was embarrassed to live in a two-story home when my friends lived in apartments. I was afraid of being called spoiled, of not being liked. No wonder I pushed money away! I had formed this idea that money got in the way of love. Given a choice, I choose love! If my negative ideas about money became a person, I think my money person would be a big, scary, violent biker who didn’t bathe. Ick. That was my old money. This relationship had to go. So I fired the biker, and I thought about who I would like to have a relationship with. Who would I love to receive from? Meet my new money: a tall, dark, handsome man who wears an elegant tux, carries a bouquet of red roses, and woos me. He loves me, and I want to make this relationship work!

Sounds like me.
You’re married.

Yes I am. What happened when you changed your money guy?
That very month strangers started calling me out of the blue and hiring me. Within six months I had added thirty new clients and started a waiting list and group coaching to handle the overflow.

Wow. Do you have any other success stories?
Every time I do a seminar I get phone calls from attendees with miraculous stories of jobs and contracts and checks coming in that they didn’t expect. The biggest windfall that I heard of was a twenty thousand dollar contract. [note to readers: my current record is $87,000 within a few hours of our first session.] I’ve posted some of the letters on my website at www.howtobeamoneymagnet.com. My own income jumped from $900 to $5000 in one month. I was amazed.

Just by changing your relationship with money?
The key is to keep the conversation with money going. Money isn’t going to rescue you, but money will be your partner. How can you be a better partner to money? What actions can you take to make the relationship better? Action is what makes change real. Keep asking money how I can make the relationship better. I see money as a spiritual teacher who challenges us to be more creative and courageous than we were being. Money is just a metaphor for the universe itself. You can fight the universe or you can seek to learn from it and love it. Especially when it’s challenging. That’s money.

How is your approach different from other prosperity programs?
Nobody else has made money a person. It’s a lot easier to do what needs to be done when you’re in love. I clearly bring a lot more feminine energy to a subject that tends to be very masculine. I think we need both the masculine “doing” energy and the mystery of feminine magic. Abundance and prosperity come from unexpected places…

How do people get Financial Alchemy?
Go to www.howtobeamoneymagnet.com. You can sign up for the next seminar or order a CD. If you only get one thing, I recommend getting the workbook “Financial Alchemy: Twelve Months of Magic and Manifestation.” It’s a combination of Financial Alchemy and my secret system for manifesting all of my goals for the last three years. I use it every day. I know you’ve had great results with it too. Everything’s available at www.howtobeamoneymagnet.com. Remember, your abundance and prosperity serve the world!

Top Five Tips to Become a Money Magnet

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Are you a money magnet?

You’ve already proven your intelligence, talent, and tenacity. You work hard, and you have so much to offer, so why isn’t your value reflected in your pocketbook?

You could be repelling Money with unconscious beliefs and behaviors.

Here are five quick tips to attract more Money into your life:

Money Magnet Tip #1
Appreciate Money! If even a penny shows up on the sidewalk, thank Money for the gift. Don’t worry about denomination; appreciate everything. Think of how good you feel when you’re valued for even a small gesture. It’s the same for Money. Every time you practice receiving and appreciating, you train the universe to send you more.

Money Magnet Tip #2
Strengthen your Boundaries. I define boundaries as the courage to say “yes” to what you want and “no” to what you don’t want. You teach the universe how you want to be treated with every choice you make. Let go of what others think about you, and be true to yourself. Clear the clutter and energy drains in your life. Weak boundaries attract exploitation, resentment, and a sense of powerlessness. Strong boundaries build your self esteem, and they free you to focus on what is important to you. This is very attractive.

Money Magnet Tip #3
Make a Wish List. Make a list of 100 things you would be, do or have if money were no object. The length of the list stretches you out of scarcity thinking. The items on the list put what you want on your radar. Wish lists are magical. Through a mental process called Reticular Activation, your mind will start to discover opportunities to manifest the items on your list that may have been invisible to you before. Notice how things on your list will “show up” with the means to pay for them!

Money Magnet Tip #4
Become an excellent Money manager. As my friend John Berg used to say, “Know what you have. Know what you owe. Know where it comes from. Know where it goes.” Automatically set aside Money for wealth building, even if you’re paying down debt. Learn how to read an Asset/Liability form. Set up Quickbooks or Quicken or a spread sheet. Paying attention to Money makes Money feel appreciated.

Money Magnet Tip #5
Surround yourself with Success. Hang around the people who’ve mastered what you want to learn, and you’ll evolve yourself that much faster. I call this Success by Association. We naturally take on characteristics of the people we are around the most. If you want to be financially free, spend your time with financially successful people who share your values. Pick up their mindset and practices for wealth building. Your worldview and your behavior will naturally shift to support more abundance and prosperity.
