The Perrfect Purposeful Life

First there’s Sara*. She’s smart. Capitol S smart.

An educated – as in full-ride, Ivy-League educated.

And she’s pretty darned successful (2.4 mil a year kind of ‘successful’).

But privately, she’s been hauling around a heavy, private burden.

Despite all the trappings of ‘the good life’ she was unspeakably unhappy and quietly seething with resentment most of the time – close to tapped energy-wise, dispassionate about almost everything (accept her guy, her kids and the very odd project), and disoriented as hell.

And she’d no idea what to do about it.

‘I’m 45 years old and honestly? I’m used to getting everything I set my mind to.  Education.  Business.  Money.  Marriage.  Kids.  Which is why I thought I’d have life by the tail with all this under my belt? I really did. I mean, this is the dream, right?  But I feel trapped, suffocated… I don’t even like most of the crap – or the people – in my life… It’s ridiculous…’

Which is why straight-as-an-arrow-and-none-of-that-funny-business Sara came to way-off-the-beaten-path, we’re-not-in-Kansas-anymore-Toto, Soul-Mapping me.

All the ‘right stuff’ hadn’t done much right by her, so she was willing to take a walk on the ‘wild side’ to find out what would.

Then there was Zaida*. A well-known author and gifted therapist (innovative and courageous healer of hearts, her Soul Map said), she’s a woman who knows exactly what she’s here to do and has little trouble doing it. She’s also someone who consults both her stars and the best turbo-charged success teachers around: whatever helps her help herself is a-okay with her.

What’s been kicking up all kinds of private crapola for her seems to be the men in (and then out of) her life, and the toll its taking in terms of lost confidence and self-esteem, lost time and energy, lost heart and lost money (lots and lots of lost money, as it turned out).

‘I know why I’m here. What I don’t know is why I have relationship disaster after relationship disaster, and why they cost me so much?  I keep giving and giving and I keep feeling ripped off and torn apart. I thought living your purpose was supposed to reward you…’

What gives?

Smarts + education + Success should = happy, right?

Clarity + on her path + doing her thing brilliantly should = richly rewarded, right?

Well, not exactly.

See, there’s two (intertwined and interdependent) parts to living your Purpose (with a cool twist thrown in that I’ll talk about in a minute).

One without the other and you’re gonna end up with pffft. You just can’t help it.

It’s like paddling a canoe with just one oar in the water: lots and lots of locomotion but not a whole lotta forward movement.

In short, you can’t fast-track your Purpose by skipping, ignoring or by-passin’ the wisdom of your life’s pain: do not pass go, do not collect (enjoy, keep)…

Just round and round and round the board game of life without a whole lot of the things that really matter to you in your ‘bank account.’

Here’s what I mean.

All right then: how does it work?

During Zaida’s second Soul Map session, the behind-the-scenes story about what’s  really going on (and why) became clear (as did what to do about it): her fear of alone-ness has had her mistaking ideal client relationships for ‘ideal relationships’ because she wasn’t working her Life Lesson (aka the source of the love I seek is first found within me).

Purposeful or not, Zaida’s been mistaking connection for the wrong kind of love – hurting her own heart (and the hearts of those she’s really meant to serve) over and over again in a confounding cycle that’s been costing her big time (and futzin’ with her intuition and her businesses).

Without her Life Lesson firmly in place she simply couldn’t help but use the folks she’s here to serve to serve her own hurtin’ heart first, which made big chunks of her ‘giving’ more about getting…

With Communications Specialist Extraordinaire Sara, her Soul Map made clear she’s actually way more on track Purpose-wise (with a couple of notable exceptions) than her in-the-tank level of dissatisfaction and disorientation seemed to suggest.

Trouble is she’s been so busy avoiding her Life Lesson (the way to powerful, evocative and innovative communication that pulls is through vulnerability) that whatever joy she could’ve gotten from living her Purpose’s been choked off as she’s swallowed her feelings, kept to the facts ‘n’ figures, and buried her softer side so she could fast-track her way to ‘success’.

Without her Life Lesson in its proper place, she just couldn’t see how to win at her own best game despite having put herself in the perfect position to win, at least on the outside…

Once Sara began to experiment a bit, sharing her heart with her inner circle more, her writing became easier and tons more enjoyable, and she started getting an influx of positive responses from silent quarters. Within six months, she had a new bounce in her step, a much richer social life and a number of exciting new clients – including a mega-deal she was over the moon about (one she’s positive would’ve gone to a larger, by-the-book competitor not all that long ago).

The difference? She spoke from her heart as well as her head during the sales presentation, and found that her new client wasn’t just looking for someone with a grasp of the metrics and mission, but a heart capable of looking out for the best for everyone.
