Here’s the biggest, most revolutionary business secret that’s so OBVIOUS it’s almost impossible to see: LEARN TO ASK.
1) ASK for input. You wanna know what your customers want? Don’t guess or try to be a mind reader. Just ask them! Obvious, huh? Before you build the widget, write the proposal, or design that seminar, ask your audience what they’re looking for. My best teleclasses came from “tell me what you want to know” emails. What could be easier than answering questions? And nothing makes people happier than giving them what they ask for. ALL the super successful people I know ask before they offer.
2) ASK the experts. Oooooh this has been a tough one for me! One of my earliest phrases as a toddler was “Gana do self.” That philosophy’s okay when you’re learning to tie your shoes, but it’s not so great when you’re building a business. If I hadn’t had coaches and mentors every step of the way, I’d be answering phones and fetching coffee today. If they didn’t fire me first. (I make an AWFUL secretary.) And believe me, I’ve wasted years and maybe a million dollars by not asking questions soon enough, by trying to figure it out all by myself.
3) ASK for help. You know all those gurus who say ‘Do the hard stuff first’– I say don’t do it at all! Give it to someone else. The stuff I do well I do very, very well. Instant money magic and quick life transformation? No sweat. But don’t let me near accounting, scheduling, or mailing. I conisistently make mistakes, no matter how careful I try to be. Hiring someone else is a NECESSITY! That weakest link is going to bring you down. If you’re the weakest link, replace yourself.
4) Work with the best. Getting good help is essential for your survival, whether it’s medical, personal, or professional, and it can be HARD to find! And frankly I’ve hired some scammy creeps who cost me tens of thousands of dollars on bad “help”, so I’m going to open up my rolodex and share my business faves.

Hey Alchemists–
I just came across a fantastic article on the psychology of money. Our brains are WIRED to respond to money in a very specific way. It’s as if the moment the idea of money arises, our warm and fuzzy love feelings switch off, and we go into competition and self-sufficiency mode. Money makes us IRRATIONAL.
This has everything to do with the “Money vs. Love” problem I talk about with Financial Alchemy, and why the old affirmations and law of attraction tricks don’t go far enough. We have to literally re-wire your response–get you thinking about money from a different part of your brain!
In the meanwhile, this is fascinating:
Dough, wonga, greenbacks, cash. Just words, you might say, but they carry an eerie psychological force. Chew them over for a few moments, and you will become a different person. Simply thinking about words associated with money seems to makes us more self-reliant and less inclined to help others. And it gets weirder: just handling cash can take the sting out of social rejection and even diminish physical pain.
This is all the stranger when you consider what money is supposed to be. For economists, it is nothing more than a tool of exchange that makes economic life more efficient. Just as an axe allows us to chop down trees, money allows us to have markets that, traditional economists tell us, dispassionately set the price of anything from a loaf of bread to a painting by Picasso. Yet money stirs up more passion, stress and envy than any axe or hammer ever could. We just can’t seem to deal with it rationally… but why?
There is a theme that runs throughout the Tao Te
Ching and it is to Be Like Water. This is a potent
metaphor that I have been reflecting on recently.
There are many incredible attributes of water, but
there are two in particular that I want to highlight
for helping you live a peaceful and joyous life.
1.) Water can never be hurt, damaged, or destroyed.
That’s right – you can freeze it, boil it, or vaporize
it, and it still perfectly fine.
It’s still water.
It really doesn’t matter what happens to it. Water
cannot be grasped, it cannot be held. It cannot be
hurt by the environment because it simply shapes
itself accordingly and continues on its wondrous
journey.
Which leads me to my next point:
2.) Water shapes itself to its environment, but
it always gets to where it is going.
Water always gets to where it is going. You are
probably familiar with the water cycle from
Geology 101. Water is present in the ocean. It
then gets absorbed into the clouds as moisture.
The clouds then move over the land and it rains or
snows. The water then eventually makes its way
back to the ocean.
Sounds simple, right?
Well, as you know, water can take an infinite
number of detours as it makes its way back to
the ocean. It can remain frozen in a glacier for
eons. It can end up in a dam.
It can flow its way through endless streams and
tributaries. It can end up buried in the ground.
But eventually it always makes its way back to
the ocean. And then it always makes its way back
to the clouds and falls down as rain.
Can you let yourself be like water?
Instead of holding yourself in opposition to the
world, your life, and what is happening, can you
think of this metaphor of water? Can you let yourself
flow with what is, knowing that you will always
end up where you want to go?
If you are experiencing turbulent times, trust that
the greater part of you has the power to heal, to
nourish, and to sustain you. And trust that this
same part of you will keep you on track, no matter
how many detours you seem to be taking.
The spiritual part of ourselves is always on
purpose, gently helping you become the greatness
that you are.
Be like water and become attuned to the endless
flow of wisdom and insight within yourself.
When you do, all of life will take on a whole
new meaning.
