The Law of Attractive Whining

Monday, July 28th, 2008

It happened again. I had that thought, “I want (what that other person has)! Why don’t I have that?”

Two weeks later it drops into my lap.

Let me give you some background:

In 2006 I saw two of my friends were speaking at a giant expo in Los Angeles. I immediately went into envy mode. I whined to myself, “I want to do that! Why didn’t I think of that?”

Two weeks later I was handed a booth and speaking gig at that very same expo.

Last year I heard that a friend on my book tour was going to be interviewed on ABC-TV in Sacramento. I whined to myself, “I want that! Why don’t I get to be on ABC-TV?” She had a last minute conflict and I ended up taking her place on the interview.

Now I met a guy on facebook. (Really incredible man. I don’t know if it’s cool to mention his name here.) He’s interviewing with a top book agent who only does six figure deals. Same story. I whined to myself, “I want that! Why don’t I have that?”

About two weeks later I went to the American Book Expo and caught the interest of a significant publisher. Since then I’ve been getting the interest of prestigious literary agents. (Now I have to write a book proposal. Another excuse to whine…) I also found a mentor to guide me on getting corporate sponsorships and nonprofit partnerships for my book. Wouldn’t that be cool?

But really, this happens ALL THE TIME.

I’m thinking about why this works. Shouldn’t whining and envy and self-pity be low vibration and repellant?

Apparently not.

I think, perhaps, it works because I don’t obsess about this stuff. It plants an idea in my head of what’s possible. And then I DON’T WORK AT IT! All I have to do is whine, resent that I don’t have something too, then move on.

And then be ready to do whatever must be done when the opportunity arises, but in the meanwhile I’m focusing on other stuff.

This approach hasn’t worked with romance. If it had, I’d be dating Clive Owen.

Any thoughts or theories or connections to Clive Owen?

Top Five Tips to Become a Money Magnet

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Are you a money magnet?

You’ve already proven your intelligence, talent, and tenacity. You work hard, and you have so much to offer, so why isn’t your value reflected in your pocketbook?

You could be repelling Money with unconscious beliefs and behaviors.

Here are five quick tips to attract more Money into your life:

Money Magnet Tip #1
Appreciate Money! If even a penny shows up on the sidewalk, thank Money for the gift. Don’t worry about denomination; appreciate everything. Think of how good you feel when you’re valued for even a small gesture. It’s the same for Money. Every time you practice receiving and appreciating, you train the universe to send you more.

Money Magnet Tip #2
Strengthen your Boundaries. I define boundaries as the courage to say “yes” to what you want and “no” to what you don’t want. You teach the universe how you want to be treated with every choice you make. Let go of what others think about you, and be true to yourself. Clear the clutter and energy drains in your life. Weak boundaries attract exploitation, resentment, and a sense of powerlessness. Strong boundaries build your self esteem, and they free you to focus on what is important to you. This is very attractive.

Money Magnet Tip #3
Make a Wish List. Make a list of 100 things you would be, do or have if money were no object. The length of the list stretches you out of scarcity thinking. The items on the list put what you want on your radar. Wish lists are magical. Through a mental process called Reticular Activation, your mind will start to discover opportunities to manifest the items on your list that may have been invisible to you before. Notice how things on your list will “show up” with the means to pay for them!

Money Magnet Tip #4
Become an excellent Money manager. As my friend John Berg used to say, “Know what you have. Know what you owe. Know where it comes from. Know where it goes.” Automatically set aside Money for wealth building, even if you’re paying down debt. Learn how to read an Asset/Liability form. Set up Quickbooks or Quicken or a spread sheet. Paying attention to Money makes Money feel appreciated.

Money Magnet Tip #5
Surround yourself with Success. Hang around the people who’ve mastered what you want to learn, and you’ll evolve yourself that much faster. I call this Success by Association. We naturally take on characteristics of the people we are around the most. If you want to be financially free, spend your time with financially successful people who share your values. Pick up their mindset and practices for wealth building. Your worldview and your behavior will naturally shift to support more abundance and prosperity.

The Lie of Attraction

Monday, July 21st, 2008

I love and believe in all this vision board/intention setting/beliefs change your reality filter stuff. And there’s a big blind spot in all of this.

I call this the Tyranny of Positive Thinking, or the Lie of Attraction. There’s a promise being made: “If you think good things, good things happen. If something bad happened, it’s because you had a negative thought.” I reject this blame-the-victim equation. Raising your vibration and setting your intentions are not insurance against tragedy.

Imagination–positive or negative–is hugely important in manifestion. I believe that 100%. And sometimes stuff happens (or doesn’t happen) anyway. I come across so much pain in people who are visualizing, meditating, tithing (and all the other stuff that should be manifesting them wealth and love and abundance and prosperity), and they aren’t seeing results. They blame themselves. Even their positive-thinking friends may be blaming them.

My personal reframe is a belief that when there is delay or tragedy in my life, my soul has made a decision that there is something precious in the experience that serves my true purpose. Some how. If I can survive it. (There have been times when that was an issue.)

I don’t think it’s helpful to outlaw negative feelings and thoughts. The last thing anyone needs is to feel guilty, angry or scared of feeling bad! Appreciate the wisdom of the shadow (to sound all Debbie Ford-y). It has something to teach you, and until you listen it will just come back louder. What if every obstacle, setback and negative thought existed only to move you forward to your goal?

So I would like us to utilize visualization and manifestation with a LIGHT TOUCH. We are generally more creative when we are optimistic, and that’s a good reason to think positive. Visualization helps us rehearse for success, and that makes success easier to manifest. I think there is magic to intention and requests to the universe. This is a part of my daily and weekly practice.

And there are no guarantees. IT’S A GAME. Set your intention and see what happens. I find the lighter the attachment, the quicker the results. As the Universe sees fit…
